H.E. President Ramaphosa commends BVI’s continental contribution to Vaccine Excellence and Animal Health
The Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI) was deeply honoured to receive commendation from His Excellency Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, on 21 May 2026, for its continental contribution to vaccine excellence, animal health, and biosecurity during his courtesy visit to the Institute this morning. H.E. President Ramaphosa was accompanied by a distinguished delegation of Honourable Ministers and senior Government officials.
In his remarks, H.E. President Ramaphosa acknowledged and commended BVI for its strategic role in supporting animal health, livestock disease control, and regional biosecurity across the SADC region and beyond. He further appreciated the strong collaboration between BVI and South African counterparts, particularly through Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) and the Agricultural Research Council–Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (ARC-OVI), and assured BVI of South Africa’s continued commitment to strengthening this important partnership.
Welcoming the President and his delegation, the Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Honourable David Tshere, highlighted BVI as a critical strategic asset for the livestock sector, not only in Botswana but across sub-Saharan Africa. He underscored the importance of regional cooperation in addressing transboundary animal diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), and called for stronger collaboration in vaccine preparedness, surveillance, and livestock traceability to improve regional response capacity.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of BVI, Ms Morati Pusumane, presented BVI’s value proposition, emphasising the quality, relevance, and proven effectiveness of BVI’s FMD vaccines. She further highlighted BVI’s broader contribution beyond vaccine supply, including the provision of critically needed technical support, expertise, and solutions that strengthen disease control and livestock sector resilience. Further, she expanded on the BVI product portfolio, beyond the FMD vaccines.
In delivering the vote of thanks, the BVI Board Chairperson, Mr Ikanyeng Segonetso, expressed sincere appreciation to H.E. President Ramaphosa for honouring BVI with the visit, describing it as a strong vote of confidence in Botswana and the SADC Region’s animal health capability, and in BVI’s strategic role in regional biosecurity. He reaffirmed BVI’s commitment to building partnerships that translate into measurable outcomes, with expanded collaboration in diagnostics, research and development, technical training, and future preparedness initiatives.
This important engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment between Botswana and South Africa to deepen cooperation, strengthen animal health systems, and advance sustainable livestock development for the benefit of the region and beyond.
