Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe Makes Historic Visit to the BVI
Botswana and the wider SADC region are demonstrating resolve and unified action in managing the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, supported by a legacy of robust animal health strategies and regional collaboration.
Yesterday on 17 February 2026, Vice President of The Republic of Botswana, and Minister of Finance, Mr. Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, paid a landmark visit to the Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI), a distinguished centre of excellence internationally recognized for its innovation and leadership in vaccine development for Botswana, the SADC region and beyond.
Following Kgotla meetings in Jackalas No. 1 and Phitshane Molopo, the Vice President reaffirmed the critical importance of maintaining Botswana’s green zone status as a foundation for national economic prosperity, regional stability, and the competitiveness of Southern Africa’s livestock sector. He highlighted that strategic disease control measures and partnerships continue to safeguard export access, livelihoods, and food security across the continent.
During his visit, the Vice President encouraged the Institute to accelerate expansion, deepen its research capabilities, and strengthen its role as a global leader in veterinary innovation and beyond. He reassured BVI of the government’s unwavering support, affirming that bold vision and institutional backing are central to meeting both current and future health needs.
BVI Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Andrew Madeswi, noted that BVI continues to revamp and expand its production capacity in line with its proud history of supporting regional FMD control programmes. Under its forward-looking strategy, BVI is not only reinforcing FMD vaccine supply for the region, but is also advancing research and diversifying into other critical products to serve evolving needs in the SADC region and beyond.
Acting Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Edwin Dikoloti, extended heartfelt thanks to the Vice President for his historic visit and direct community engagement amid this important period. He recognized the Vice President’s strategic vision, timely guidance, and the instrumental mandate entrusted to BVI.
Through BVI’s dedicated expertise and Botswana’s proactive leadership, the nation and region remain united and equipped to deliver effective, science-driven disease control, securing resilient livestock industries for SADC and the continent.
